Grand Rounds: January 7, 2016

We kicked off 2016 with a Grand Rounds session that featured a pair of informative lectures.

First off, we hear from our OMFS colleague, Dr. Ara Mirzaians, DMD, who answers a number of frequently asked questions about dental trauma. Avulsed teeth ideally are replanted within one hour, after which the periodontal ligament (PDL) starts to die. It is best to advise patients, though, that even under the best of circumstances the attempt to replant the tooth is more likely to fail than to succeed. Check out his lecture for some helpful tips!

Next up is Dr. Max Fitzgerald who uses a real case to illustrate how the potential for anchoring bias can be troublesome. He reminds us that when there is limited information and worsening patient pathology, it is wise to treat the whole differential diagnosis (when appropriate).

We’ll see you next week!
